Food Stores

ABOUT THE STORES

The community food stores at Turlin Moor and Bourne support residents through lifes challenges.

We started during the pandemic and continue to help with the rising costs of living.

We help to prevent people needing food banks, support people back on their feet, reduce food waste and tackle loneliness by providing a warm, welcoming spaces.

Our Mission

The food stores at Turlin Moor and Bourne are designed to support residents originally affected by the pandemic and now the ongoing cost of living crisis. They are not food banks, so no referral is required. The food is not free, and our model is aimed at supporting residents we identify as likely to be in need based on their postcode.

Our aim is to:

  • Help prevent residents needing food banks and support recovery after emergency use and support those reluctant to seek help due to stigma, especially older people on very low incomes.
  • Cut food waste while helping residents develop cookery skills using low-cost, nutritious ingredients to better manage limited budgets.
  • Reduce loneliness by offering warm spaces where residents can meet over tea, coffee or homemade soup.
  • Host services including blood pressure checks, social prescribing (Help & Care), mental health support (Poole Wellbeing Hub), budgeting and benefits advice (Citizens Advice, Enable), plus flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Join Us - As a Member

If you live within the BH12 4 area (Bourne estate), Turlin Moor or Hamworthy you can join our food store as a member. You do not need to be on benefits to use the shop.

Help Us - Food donations

Our food stores receive regular support from local shops, churches, schools, care homes, pet food bank and yacht club who either collect food for us or host donation baskets in their premises.

With the rising cost of living we are asking the public, if they are able, to donate surplus food to our food stores. Food can be donated at: the Bourne Community Hub, BH12 4DY (Mon-Fri from 9:30am - 4pm) or  St Gabriel's Church, BH16 5BH (Tuesdays between 10:30am - 4pm)

Join Us - As a Volunteer

We are looking for reliable, physically active volunteers to help with setting up our food stores. The role will include: unloading / unpacking crates of food; stocking shelves / tables; splitting food into smaller batches; and date checking donated food.
